Summer, Summer, Summertime!

No time to sit back and unwind...

The thought of my first Florida summer since becoming a runner is making me nervous. I don't have any races on my schedule until September because the only thing offered in my area are 5ks and I still have a hard time with the first 3 miles of each and every run. During previous summers I've always tried to do as little as possible during the hottest portions of the day. Unfortunately that lasts from about 9am to 8pm here in Hades. Combine that with the facts that I am not a morning person and it's becoming increasingly hard for me to stick to a schedule and I'm totally worried that I'm in danger of missing too many runs and undoing all the work that I've put into my running thus far.

To combat that I made a training schedule that included speedwork, long runs, and tempo runs starting this week. So far that's been a #fail! On one hand I want to get faster and better, but when the time comes for me to I strap on my shoes, I just want to zone out and run. So I've decided that that's what I'm going to do. My plan is to run 20+ miles per week for the rest of the summer. I figure that is a good base and my pace will improve as my body becomes more efficient at running. One can always hope anyways!

I'm not going to lie, training in the summer is just brutal. You're going to have to resolve to get up EARLY to get in long runs if you want to avoid melting. Last summer was my first summer of full on training and there were times I thought I was going to just die out there... damn humidity! Your handheld will save your life and don't think twice about running through people's sprinklers! LOL! :)

Last summer I was doing triathlons, so the swimming at least helped me cool off. My running suffered, but I am determined to not let that slack this year so I get up early and will join the Track Shack Galloway group in June instead of October so I have someone to do long runs with in the wee hours of the morning. As much as I hate the treadmill, you could try that during the summer to keep up your base.

And I know the feeling about 5Ks. I can do 3-4 miles easily, but they are not my fastest. I am really good at negative splits, so that works great for a longer race when I can afford to take it easy for the first few miles as I warm up and pick up speed as I go, but at a 5K there is not time for that! I am determined though to run a 5K in 30 minutes this year, so I'm going to hit the track!

I wish I could run. I'm not a runner, at all. I don't even run from dogs! Good luck.

I followed you from Ask Wifey's page.

Hey there, friend! I'm LOL'ing b/c you and I are just alike on that whole first couple of miles thing...legs just aren't there until mile 3 (as you know). Anyway, I just learned today that I won't be working at all this summer (#fail), so I'll be able to get some good training in... same issue as you, though. Trying to work around the weather. Let's plan some runs together. I'm thinking I might join the Galloway run/walk group at Track Shack (if I can scrape up the funds). Interested? It's the humidity that really gets me - like Morgan said. Ugh.

@La'Tonya I never thought I would be a runner, more less actually look forward to going out to run! If you ever want to give it a try, go for it :)

@Morgan I went out for my run at 9 o'clock tonight and it was STILL humid! I definitely have to get up when the alarm goes off.

@Kitzzy and Robin Is the Galloway program the same as MarathonFest? I was thinking about signing up for that one, if I find a job before it starts.
